How much of your energy is going toward things you aren’t even doing?
The conversation you keep putting off. The task you move from one list to the next. The decision you revisit every few days without making it. You may not be working on any of them right now, but each one can still take up space in your mind.
How long have you been carrying some of these — a month, six months, a year?
What you’re carrying may be no harder to handle than it was when it first came up. But now it comes with the weight of time: the repeated reminders, the promises to get to it, and the frustration of finding it still there. After a while, you can become so used to carrying that weight that you forget how it might feel to put it down.
What could you do with the energy you’ve been spending just carrying it?
Earlier this month, I wrote about the BER months as a chance to remember what matters — a checkpoint, not a countdown. Once you know what matters to you, it’s worth asking what’s competing for the energy you want to give it.
That’s where order comes in. Order doesn’t require a spotless home, an empty inbox, or a heroic push to finish everything before December. It begins when you notice what keeps drawing on your attention and choose what to do with it.
Clear what no longer serves you. Maybe it’s an obligation you agreed to months ago, a project you no longer want to pursue, or a stack of things you keep moving from place to place. Each one takes energy to keep, even after it stops serving the life you’re building. Acknowledge what has changed. Have the conversation, close the project, or let the things go. Clearing creates space for what matters now.
Complete what needs completing. Make the appointment you’ve been meaning to schedule. Send the message you keep composing in your head. Finish the task that has followed you from one to-do list to the next. Some of these may take less time to do than you’ve spent remembering and postponing them. Notice the relief when they’re done and no longer asking for your attention.
Decide what needs deciding. Will you accept the invitation? Which direction will you take with the idea you’ve been considering? Is that commitment still one you want to make? Gather what you need to know, choose with the information you have today, and take the next step. You can move forward, set a date to revisit the question, or let it go. Any of those choices can free you from circling it again tomorrow.
Of course, not everything unfinished needs immediate action. Some ideas need time, and some conversations need care. You can choose to leave something open. The difference is that you’ve chosen — it no longer has to keep asking you for an answer every morning.
And once you begin, something shifts. One completed task brings relief. One honest decision gives you a direction to move. That lighter feeling can give you the energy to face the next thing — or to spend your afternoon on something you actually want to do. You may even feel as though you have more time, simply because you’re no longer spending it revisiting what you haven’t done.
The victory is feeling your energy return — and knowing you get to choose where it goes.
That’s the space you get back. It gives you room to think more clearly, be present with the people you love, build what matters to you, and say yes to a new adventure when it calls.
So take a look at what you’ve been carrying. What could you clear, complete, or decide today?
Take the first step now. Reclaim your energy. Make room for what matters. Order creates capacity.
