The Miracle You Stopped Seeing

What if the greatest miracle in your life is one you’ve stopped seeing?

Not because it disappeared; it just became familiar.

The extraordinary becomes ordinary; the miracle becomes invisible. What once filled us with awe slowly fades into the background of everyday life — not because it has become less meaningful, but because we’ve simply grown accustomed to it.

That’s what has always made It’s a Wonderful Life such a timeless story. Clarence, George Bailey’s guardian angel, didn’t restore George’s hope by reminding him to count his blessings. Instead, he showed George what life would have looked like if those blessings had never existed. Only then did George truly see the gift of the life he already had.

Years later, psychologists explored this same idea through an exercise they called mental subtraction. Rather than asking people to focus on a blessing in their lives, they asked them to briefly imagine that it had never happened — a relationship, an opportunity, an achievement, even their health. Surprisingly, people experienced greater positive emotion than those who simply reflected on having those blessings. By imagining their absence, they rediscovered their presence.

This reinforces something I’ve discovered: Presence doesn’t change your life. It changes your relationship with your life.

Presence isn’t simply noticing what’s in front of you. It’s seeing familiar things with fresh eyes, allowing today’s ordinary moments to become extraordinary once again.

Miracles don’t disappear. They simply become familiar.

So let me ask you…

What blessing have you quietly adapted to?

Is it a relationship, your health, a lifelong friend, the freedom to choose your own path, or a place that now feels like home?

Or perhaps your own life?

We spend so much time searching for the next miracle that we overlook the ones we’ve already been given. Sometimes we don’t need another blessing. Sometimes we simply need the awareness to recognize the blessings that have quietly become part of everyday life.

Presence helps us notice what’s unfolding before us and rediscover what familiarity has quietly hidden.

Every once in a while, try a little mental subtraction.

Because sometimes the greatest miracle isn’t something new to discover…

It’s something familiar to see again. ❤️
